YAG

Written Evaluation

Before coming up with ideas for my designs I realised I needed inspiration for me to continue to design. My main research for ideas was mainly for castles as I decided I wanted my main piece’s to include a castle. Without this research I would have used my own photography of wrecked castles and also modern German castles where I would have used my primary resources. I gathered research from other artist from deviant art from a range of photograph and digital images, these images helped me come up with designs for my main piece and the surrounding background. When researching for my other work such as characters and clothing and weaponry, I used real people for the characters and I drew the body line from my friends body, I researched clothing using Google images and a game created by Ubisoft called Assassins Creed 2, where I used the strategy guide from the game where this shows concept work from the design company. This book’s concept art includes clothing, weapons, buildings and environment, where I gathered ideas for my main character. These concept designs helped me along to create concept ideas of my own such as weapons and buildings.

When creating my main piece, I was inspired by an artist called Justin Kercher who is an English photographer and one of his photographs called Dream Castle 2 inspired me to paint a castle with mist around it. As my task was to create a scene from a brothers grim tale, the story of which I picked had a castle in it and the surrounding is a dark creepy forest, this is where I thought it would be a good idea to add a misty fog to give the painting a more creepy and dark effect. My painting is quite similar to Justin’s photograph as the fog is surrounding the castle, this difference with my painting is that you see more of the castle and there are additional features such as a hilly grass with a man on a horse which is painting in black acrylic, to show that he is a dark evil soldier. I also drew on bare tree branches to give off a lifeless feeling.

During this unit I have come across new techniques in my drawing and also painting. I have never really painted with acrylic without using just using one colour. When creating my main peices I experimented with light and tone using the colours and adding white or black in the colour to make by peice lighter or darker in its areas.

When I starting working on the final A1 sheets, I came across different techniques using colour and also materials, which give a better mood to the image, examples of this are on one of my sheets where I have created a small thumbnail drawing of a section of a Blimp, this section is of the top of the Blimp and would be made of material, as this section would be made of this material I used cotton and ripped it, to make it look as it was attached with cotton.

I feel that it was quite easy to create ideas, as I have a creative imagination. I thought it would be a good idea to create two final pieces, one showing the castle from a distance and one showing inside the castle with my created character. I researched castles with mist around them and also knights on horses for the final piece showing the outside of the castle. For the tree in this final piece I looked outside of my room and drew a tree similar. The whole of the second final piece was all created from the top of my head, I didn’t need to do any research or look for any inspiration as I just came up with most the painting/ drawing as I was going along creating it. As I was creating artwork for the story “The Man of Iron” I had to create a character of iron and put him in a cage as he gets captured by the king of the castle. I decided to create a cage with a wall because I could show more lighting and depth, this would show good use of colour and a good atmosphere.
